The combination of Games Design and Creative Writing is a relatively new but flourishing field.

The connection between these two disciplines – whether in novels like Tim Etchell's The Broken World or in the increased writing quality which coupled with design and programming skills produces ever more exciting games – has never been stronger.

By studying these two disciplines together you will receive a uniquely contemporary education which will increase your employability and will put you to the forefront of a new and expanding field.

This course is aimed at students who want to develop an understanding of the factors that shape the games industry, as well as the techniques and principles used in the design of games. In addition you will improve your creative skills through the analysis, interpretation and creation of literary texts.

Programme description

Key Modules

The course will prepare you for a career in the digital games industry or allow specialisation within the field of Digital Games in combination with Creative Writing.

Module & Subject

Games Design

At each level you take modules in:

  • Theory - develops your understanding of methods and approaches used in the analysis of games, their cultural and social significance, and historical contexts.
  • Design - it will aid your development of creative strategies for generating game design ideas and game design projects. You will undertake design projects, developing a practical understanding of creative game design.
  • Application (industry relevant skills and contexts) - it will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of the skills used currently in the games industry, including presentation and prototyping skills.

Creative Writing

This course is designed to develop your knowledge, understanding, and analytical and creative skills through the analysis, interpretation and creation of literary texts. The range and choice of modules ensure that you will achieve a sound understanding of creative writing while at the same time developing your own creative skills.

The BA consists of both compulsory and optional modules, a typical selection can be found below. Modules can vary from year to year, but these offer a good idea of what we teach.

Level 1

Compulsory

  • Games Studies 1: Introduction to Games Studies
  • Digital Prototyping 1: Wire-framing
  • Business Contexts
  • Introduction to Writing Fiction
  • Introduction to Writing Drama
  • Introduction to Writing Poetry

Level 2

Compulsory

  • Games Design 2: Mechanics & Economies
  • Games Studies 2: Concepts & Analysis

Optional

One of the following:

  • Games Development
  • Game User Research & Experience
  • Game Genres
  • Setting & World Design

Three of the following:

  • Writing Contemporary Poetry
  • Writing Journalism
  • Writing the Short Story
  • Screenwriting
  • Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy
  • Writing the Self

Level 3

Compulsory

  • Games Studies 3: Socio-Cultural Contexts

Take one of the following core projects:

  • Major Project: Commercial Games

  • Major Project: Team Project
  • Major Project: Traditional Games
  • Theory Project: Design

If Creative Writing Special Project was chosen as core then one of the following must be taken:

Entry Requirements
  • GPA 5.0 or 80%

    75% is required in any specific subjects that are stated in GCE A-level entry requirements above.
