Module & Subject

The BA consists of compulsory modules, a typical selection can be found below. Modules can vary from year to year, but these offer a good idea of what we teach.

The course is structured around three broad learning strands that run through each level:

  • Education, Culture and Society
  • Educational Theory and Development
  • Professional Skills and Practice

Level 1

  • Understanding Learning: A module that will introduce you to some of the main theoretical approaches that have helped us to understand the different ways in which children and young people learn.
  • Human Development: Childhood to Adolescence: A psychology based module that considers personal, social and emotional development, and the ways in which language, knowledge and thinking develop.
  • Education and Society: This is a sociological module that looks at the structure and provision of education in England and Wales and their historical development.
  • Multi-disciplinary Perspectives 1: A module that considers the range of professionals working in educational settings and introduces some of the key skills required in differing education interventions.
  • Study Skills and Methods of Enquiry: A module designed to 'skill you up' to cope with your studies at university.
  • Placement: A chance to put some of the ideas you have studied into practice.

Level 2

  • Living and Learning in Different Communities: Cultural Perspectives and Comparisons: The implications of culture, class, ethnicity and gender in education.
  • Working Creatively with Children and Adolescents – Emerging Themes: A chance to develop your skills in an emerging education practice.
  • Human Development: Childhood to Adolescence 2: This module continues the study of human development introduced at Level 1 with a focus on health and wellbeing.
  • Individual and Group Learning in Informal Environments: This module concentrates on the key informal education approaches and considers different arenas in which this type of learning might take place – for example, museums or city farms.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives 2: This module studies the differing ways in which we might develop effective communication and engagement with children, young people and families.
  • Research Methods: An important module that will introduce you to the key research skills that you will need for your dissertation in Year 3.
  • Placement: A chance to further develop your skills set and experience in another education setting.
